Part 3 Finding Assistance Resources for the Disabled, Elderly & Ill

In Part 3 you will find more assistance resources and look at Part 1 for the initial steps to prepare and Part 2 for organizations that have a strong focus on community service and ideas for fundraisers. 

Additionally contact the newspaper, radio stations, television stations and social media when assistance resources are given. After all the government organizations need people’s support and publicity will provide the goodwill of the public.

Assistance Resources from Local Businesses

Businesses often give assistance resources to those in need, but won’t give their help until you ask. Be ready to supply suggestions for fundraisers. It gives them an opportunity to look good in the community.

A local Papa John’s Pizza restaurant held a pizza drive for Jessica Kennedy DAWS in 1998 and raised money. It seems like pizza restaurants are one the most willing to hold a fundraiser.

The service provides audio books, books in Braille, and some large print books.

The audio books can be downloaded on the internet and special machines are provided free to read the books. Books can also be sent by mail on cassette ordered over the phone. Mailing cassettes back and forth is free.  Some magazines are also available.

Jessica Kennedy DAWS learned about this service through a caregiver and has listened to hundreds of books of many types and subjects and NLS has satisfied them all.

Resource Centers for Independent Living

Jessica Kennedy DAWS  attended a weekly support group at REACH of Dallas for over a year. The members had many different disabilities and illnesses including cerebral palsy, blind, paralyzed, mental retardation, post traumatic stress and muscular sclerosis.

They provide many services including:

TWC Texas Workforce Commission  

Resources, tips and tools to build a stronger Texas Workforce

On the whole the major function of the TWC is developing the workforce by providing support services including child care for targeted populations participating in workforce training and adult education and literacy services. In addition they provide services for people with disabilities to get training and jobs, and managing the unemployment benefits and tax programs. TWC also provides information and analysis on shifts in occupations and industries within the state and seeks to reduce discrimination in employment and housing through education and enforcement of state and federal laws.

ALS Association

The association leads the way in global research and providing assistance for people with ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) through a nationwide network of chapters, coordinating multidisciplinary care through certified clinical care centers, and fostering government partnerships. In conclusion the Association builds hope and enhances quality of life while aggressively searching for new treatments and a cure.

Go Fund Me

Launched in 2010, GoFundMe is the world’s largest social fundraising platform overall, with over $3 billion raised so far. 

Jessica Kennedy DAWS had a caregiver that suggested she start a campaign to raise money for the cost of her care, but she  has never researched it or used the service therefore can’t recommend it.

Joni Eareckson Tada quadriplegic author, artist and disability advocate hospital outreach in 1998 signs her book with a pen in her mouth

In 1998 Joni Eareckson Tada visited the rehabilitation hospital that Jessica was in for six months after her stroke. In short Joni’s visit inspired Jessica so that she saw a quadriplegic with a fulfilling life. Joni built a charity for the disabled and their families. On the whole Joni and Friends focus is on their spiritual, emotional and physical well-being through outreach like summer camps.Additionally she hosts a Christian radio program and also began Wheels for the World. In short Wheels for the World restores wheelchairs and takes them to needy people around the world and also custom fit each.

Assistance Resources for Children with Disabilities and Special Healthcare Needs

First be aware that Jessica Kennedy DAWS has never used this resource and therefore can’t recommend them.

 Paying for Senior Care also previously known as Christmas in April 

It appears that the assistance resources they focus on is elderly care, but Jessica Kennedy DAWS was 26 when they helped her with home modifications, a handicap accessible shower and a ramp.

Shortly after Jessica Kennedy DAWS moved in early 1999 to a new home Christmas in April built a ramp to provide a safe exit. Also they made her shower handicap accessible and laid a tile floor.  To sell the home she remodeled the bathroom so that it appealed to buyers. So Jessica has no pictures of the bathroom.

The Salvation Army

The Salvation Army, in brief, is an international movement as an evangelical part of the universal Christian Church. Its message is based on the Bible. Their ministry is motivated by the love of God and its mission is to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and to meet human needs in His name without discrimination. The Salvation Army is known for the Red Kettle and bell ringers donation collection outside of stores and angel trees at Christmas. Additionally they help victims of natural disasters and provide humanitarian relief. They have many elderly services like educational classes, daycare, hot-lunch programs and more. In like manner they provide help to families and individuals that need financial, emotional and spiritual assistance.

In conclusion assistance resources are everywhere if you look for organizations that are geared toward community service. Due to their dedication to community service they are the answer to your problem. While there are many assistance resources listed you may know of others.
